Character Guide to Film Noir Drama

Noir Film | Character Reference

In creating characters for an animated film always gather reference/ pegs based on descriptions. The goal is to make notes and NOT to copy.  Use it as a guideline and remember to limit your research for this may eat much of your time. Story is KING. Understand the story then you'll know who your character is.

From Daniel Arriaga's Notes
  • Read the story
  • Analyze character description
  • Observe story moments
  • Gather reference based descriptions
  • Look for gestures that best describes that character
  • Look for specific QUALITIES (actors with same qualities - movies, ref. from life)

After Gustav Klimt

"There is much to be learned from the great Masters and it is there to be read in their paintings. "

It is such, such an incredible experience...

"She's dismissive yet mysterious and seductive..."

Bullylit (2012)

Another old piece.

Early concept designs in 2012.

Character Design: Ras

The first half of our short animated film has a style that imitates the look of a concept art. All of the stills have a rough, loose nature design. This was one of the background characters which I have conceptualized.

Meet Ras.

Obviously the name was inspired from a character in Pixar's feature film UP - "Russel" :)
